1791 ENORMOUS English BIBLE + Swiss Osterwald Protestant Bewick Illustrated
An important Osterwald English Bible from 1791! This huge, folio Bible comes from the French of Protestant Swiss pastor, Jean Frederic Osterwald who was notable for being highly influential among central European Protestants, so much so that he is often called the leader of a 'second reformation'. He is remembered for his innovative dogmatics, exegeses, liturgies, and hymns, but his most important contribution was his translation of the Bible. His translation was extremely thorough and included aspects many different Bibles, seeking to make the most accurate form of scripture. According to Darlow and Moule,
'Osterwald made use of the original Hebrew and Greek, the Septuagint and the Vulgate, and the French hand German version- both Protestant and Roman Catholic. His alterations tend chiefly to modernize the language, but they sometimes also affect the sense.' (D&M 3814)
- This clearly contradicts Scripture (e.g., Leviticus 17:11, Titus 3:5, Romans 4 and 5, etc.). Seventh, the apocryphal books were never accepted by the church until the Council of Trent. Roughly 1,500 years after these books were written, the Catholic church decided to 'officially' recognize the apocrypha as Scripture.
